Depression, Anxiety, and Brain Fog from Low Thyroid Function
Did you know that your anxiety, depression, and brain fog can be related to your thyroid? Many people associate low thyroid function with fatigue, difficulty losing weight, aches and pains, constipation, and hair loss. While these are indicators of low thyroid function, there can be other symptoms. Brain function is closely associated with thyroid function. In the last 30 years, I have been in practice and have seen over a hundred thousand patient visits. While those are some of the common issues we see in patients with thyroid function, brain fog, anxiety, depression, and insomnia are also very common thyroid symptoms.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
While symptoms such as moodiness, poor memory, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating are all indicators of low thyroid function often the term ADD or ADHD is brought up when someone has difficulty concentrating. Suppose you have talked to your doctor about these symptoms and been prescribed typical medication such as an antidepressant, antianxiety drug, tranquilizer, or mood stabilizer. In that case, you may think this is helping the problem. You may be labeled as bipolar because of depression and anxiety or labeled as moody because you are up and down. Ritalin or Adderall may be prescribed for difficulty concentrating. While these medicines can help with the symptoms you may be experiencing, you still are not addressing your underlying issues, which can be a low functioning thyroid.
How to Treat Low Thyroid Function Naturally
Most doctors agree when a patient comes in with symptoms, they are prescribed medication such as Ritalin and Adderall for low concentration. But what if there was a way to treat your thyroid naturally? When we see patients in our office, the first thing we try to do is find the underlying cause of their issues. Why do they have this condition? Why are you experiencing brain fog, anxiety, depression, and fatigue? There is usually some problem in the body that is causing the issue. Typically, we run a complete set of labs to determine if you have a thyroid issue.
Testing for Thyroid Function
Often when a patient comes in, they let us know that their doctor has already performed a series of thyroid tests, and their thyroid function was considered normal. But doctors most often check only the TSH and sometimes T4 levels. I typically run six different tests for the thyroid. When I look at the test results, I can check not only for within normal range but also for above or below optimal and look for trends in the test results. When it comes to your thyroid, it is not always the test results but how the results are interpreted. I am confident once I run your labs, look at your test results, and get you on the right treatment plan you can soon be feeling better.
My treatment plans can include natural approaches with diet and supplements. Some patients do need thyroid medications. and one that is often prescribed is Synthroid. There are other options including some that are natural.
Treatment for Low Thyroid
Some patients who come into our office are already being treated for thyroid issues and are on medications, but they still feel terrible. They still have trouble losing weight, still suffer from depression and anxiety, brain fog, and fatigue. This could be a simple fix, such as switching thyroid medications or taking a different approach. We can do a round of tests that will also check vitamin deficiencies which along with thyroid conditions could be causing your trouble.
Again, it is not only the tests that are done but also how the doctor interprets your test results that will make the most significant impact. Your TSH, free T3, free T4, and even TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies can all be in normal lab ranges but still causing you symptoms. But if your doctor is not looking at the whole picture, finding solutions can be missed.
The FreeDiet® for Thyroid Balance
Patients who come to us and are still having trouble with their thyroid no matter what they do; no medication is helping symptoms, and no diet can help them lose weight. They are often frustrated. We can take them in and begin the process of our program. This includes functional evaluation and proper supplements to balance out your system.
The FreeDiet®, which I came up with for my patients, is the first step. This diet consists of eliminating foods that can cause inflammation, digestive, and other chronic health conditions. It is free of gluten, grains, sugars, yeast, dairy, eggs, soy, legumes, nightshades, and processed foods.
Patients who have used our program that includes the FreeDiet® and our Natural Medicine Formulas® have seen a difference in weight loss and symptoms. They feel better than they have in years, and we have helped them get to the underlying root cause of their gut and thyroid issues.
