What if recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs) aren’t just a bladder problem?
One of my favorite patient success stories from over 40 years of practice involves a 38-year-old woman who suffered from chronic UTIs, bladder pain, and a wide range of digestive and systemic symptoms. Despite years of medical treatment, including repeated antibiotics, her condition continued to worsen.
What we discovered through comprehensive testing changed everything.
A History of Chronic UTIs and Bladder Pain
This patient came to my clinic after experiencing 12 bladder infections in the previous 12 months.
Her doctors had prescribed multiple rounds of antibiotics. When those stopped working, they began injecting antibiotics directly into her bladder through a catheter three times a week for four weeks.
Nothing was working.
She was experiencing:
- Bladder pain and pressure
- Burning with urination
- Urinary urgency
- Frequent UTIs
- Ulcerations on her bladder wall
In fact, she had been dealing with recurrent urinary tract infections for 18 years.
A Complicated Medical History
Fourteen years earlier, she had an IUD inserted. During the procedure, the device punctured her uterine wall.
The complication went unrecognized, and it took two years to determine why she was experiencing ongoing abdominal pain and infections. Eventually, laparoscopic surgery was required to remove the IUD from her abdominal cavity.
At the time she came to see me, she was also experiencing numerous symptoms beyond her bladder issues, including:
- Stomach pain
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Insomnia
- Neck pain
- Headaches
Yet all her treatment had focused exclusively on her bladder.
She had been prescribed antibiotics, steroids, and more antibiotics, but no one was asking the most important question:
Why was this happening in the first place?
Looking for the Root Cause
Rather than focusing only on the symptoms, I performed comprehensive testing to identify the underlying causes of her health problems.
The results revealed:
- Bacterial overgrowth in the gut
- Yeast overgrowth
- Significant gut inflammation
- Gluten sensitivity with celiac genetics
- Leaky gut
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Below-optimal ferritin levels (stored iron)
- Cloudy urine with elevated inflammation markers
At first glance, these findings may seem unrelated. However, they were all pointing toward the same root issue:
A compromised immune system driven by chronic gut inflammation and dysfunction.
How Gut Health Can Contribute to Chronic UTIs
The gut plays a critical role in immune function. When the digestive system becomes inflamed and imbalanced, it can affect the entire body.
In this patient’s case, several factors appeared to be contributing to her chronic health challenges:
Bacterial and Yeast Overgrowth
Overgrowth of harmful bacteria and yeast can create ongoing inflammation throughout the digestive tract and weaken normal immune defenses.
Leaky Gut
When the intestinal barrier becomes compromised, bacteria, toxins, and partially digested food proteins can enter the bloodstream. This can trigger systemic inflammation and place additional stress on the immune system.
Gluten Sensitivity
Her testing indicated gluten sensitivity along with celiac genetics. For susceptible individuals, gluten can contribute to ongoing inflammation and immune system activation.
The Antibiotic Cycle
Although antibiotics can be necessary in certain situations, repeated use can disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut.
Each course of antibiotics may have temporarily reduced symptoms while simultaneously worsening the underlying bacterial and yeast imbalance. This created a vicious cycle where infections continued to return.
Additional Physical Trauma
The uterine injury caused by the IUD and the subsequent surgery likely contributed additional abdominal stress and digestive dysfunction, further complicating her recovery.
The Treatment Plan
To address the root causes, I placed her on the FreeDiet® along with a personalized supplement program designed to support gut healing, reduce inflammation, and restore nutritional deficiencies.
What Is the FreeDiet®?
The FreeDiet® is a nutritional program I developed years ago while searching for solutions to my own health challenges, including:
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- IBS
- Fatigue
- Skin and other health issues
The FreeDiet® eliminates many of the foods most commonly associated with inflammation and digestive dysfunction, including:
- Gluten
- Grains
- Sugar
- Yeast
- Dairy
- Eggs
- Soy
- Legumes
- Nightshades
- Processed foods
By removing these common triggers, many people experience improvements in digestive health, immune function, energy levels, and overall well-being.
Targeted Nutritional Support
In addition to the FreeDiet®, her protocol included:
The Functional Five™
- Multivitamin
- Fish oil
- Vitamin D with K
- Magnesium
- Probiotic
Gut Support Supplements
- Yeast Defeat
- Microb-Balance
- GI Mend
- Curcumin for inflammation support
Nutrient Restoration
Together, these supplements helped address nutrient deficiencies while supporting gut repair, immune health, and microbial balance.
Results After Just Two Months
The improvements were remarkable.
After only two months:
- Her bladder symptoms had resolved
- No more UTIs
- Reduced abdominal pain
- Less bloating
- Improved constipation and diarrhea
- Increased energy
- Better mental clarity
- Fewer headaches
In addition, her vitamin D and ferritin levels improved to optimal ranges, and her urine was clear with no signs of inflammation.
Four-Month Follow-Up
At four months, she continued to improve.
Most importantly:
- No bladder pain
- No urinary tract infections
- Continued improvement in digestive and overall health
A Valuable Lesson at Six Months
At her six-month visit, she reported feeling great until she began eating gluten and sugar again.
Shortly afterward, she experienced her first UTI since beginning treatment.
Once she returned to the FreeDiet®, her bladder symptoms resolved again.
This experience reinforced the connection between her dietary triggers, gut health, inflammation, and recurring urinary symptoms.
The Real Cause Wasn’t Her Bladder
For 18 years, treatment focused exclusively on her bladder.
She received antibiotics, steroids, and repeated interventions aimed at controlling symptoms.
But the underlying problem was never fully addressed.
Through comprehensive testing, we identified gut inflammation, microbial imbalance, nutrient deficiencies, and food sensitivities that were contributing to immune dysfunction and chronic symptoms.
By correcting those root causes, her health dramatically improved.
The Takeaway
If you’re struggling with recurrent UTIs, bladder pain, digestive symptoms, fatigue, brain fog, or other chronic health concerns, it may be time to look beyond symptom management and investigate the underlying causes.
Proper testing can help identify hidden factors such as:
- Gut inflammation
- Bacterial overgrowth
- Yeast overgrowth
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Food sensitivities
- Leaky gut
When these root causes are addressed, lasting improvement may be possible.
