Natural Treatment for Knee Pain

Did you know that most people with knee pain involving a torn meniscus can recover without surgery?
A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine(March 2013) demonstrated that treatment with physical therapy can be just as effective as surgery.  Researchers divided 351 adults with torn meniscus into 2 groups; surgery right away, or physical therapy only.

They were surprised to find out that after 6 months, the level of functional improvement and pain scores were the same in both groups.  So while some with severe tears need surgery, most can improve with a conservative treatment program.  We have seen similar results here at the Natural Medicine Clinic.

We’ve treated hundreds of patients with knee injuries, many involving a torn meniscus, that recover fully without needing surgery.  Some patients even come in on crutches with their knee swollen and locking.

Our holistic treatment program includes:

1. Using a cold laser to reduce pain and inflammation, and enhance microcirculation to promote healing.

2.  Active Release Techniques to reduce pain producing myofascial trigger points, adhesions and fibrous tissue, and to restore muscular balance.

3.  Chiropractic adjustments to the joints to restore normal joint function and movement.

4.  Physical therapy functional training exercises to improve strength, flexibility and balance.

5.  Nutritional supplementation to help support recovery.

We have found this program to be very effective in the non-surgical treatment and healing of meniscal tears, knee pain and injuries.

A Simple Ferritin Blood Test (that can save your life!)

test ferritin levels

test ferritin levelsA simple blood test can save your life (or vastly improve your health). It’s amazing how much we can learn about your health by properly analyzing a blood test.  Numerous conditions can show up, such as infections, deficiencies, and even allergies, just by ordering the proper blood test.

One of the most important readings in blood tests is your ferritin levels.  Ferritin indicates the amount of iron in your body’s organs and tissues.  Unfortunately, this is not checked on routine blood tests; and just because someone does not have iron-deficiency anemia does not mean they have normal ferritin levels.  “Normal” ferritin levels vary between different labs, but it can be a range of  10-300 ng/ml. However, my range for optimal ferritin test levels is 60-90 ng/ml.

So, why is this so important? Iron is essential to your health, but too little iron in your body can lead to many health issues. Too much of it can be toxic, causing organ damage, a long list of symptoms, and even death. When you have too little iron in your system, it can cause symptoms like body aches, fatigue, weakness, heart palpitations, low sex drive, irritability, restless leg syndrome, high blood pressure, depression and anxiety, headaches, hair loss, mood swings, dizziness, forgetfulness, and trouble concentrating.

When your iron levels are too high, referred to as “Hemochromatosis,” it can cause many of the exact same symptoms as too little iron.  The biggest difference is that if you don’t treat the high iron levels, then over time, it can cause organ damage and eventually lead to things like cirrhosis of the liver, heart failure, and even death. Ferritin blood tests are something that we commonly include in the lab profiles we order for our patients.  If you haven’t had your levels checked with a ferritin lab test, I would suggest you do.

If you have any questions, please give us a call, email, or contact us here. We would be happy to test ferritin levels, iron levels, and whatever else you need to be your best self.

Simple Solutions to More Energy!

more-energyWe hear so often how exhausted people are because of stress, tension, their busy schedules, etc.  However, instead of looking at the issue from the outside in (i.e., you have a crazy schedule, that’s why you’re tired), we approach it from the inside out, looking for the root cause of all that fatigue.  When we’re helping someone with low energy levels, we often start with lab testing, approaching it from two different perspectives.

First, from a standard medical perspective, to rule out illness or disease, and second, from a holistic and nutritional approach, to make sure everything is balanced.  We find that many people have some sort of deficiency in either iron, B12, or vitamin D.  These levels are typically not tested for in most medical practices, but can be a major cause of low energy levels, along with many other symptoms.  When these or other deficiencies are found, we are able to cater nutritional information and supplements towards restoring one’s energy levels.

Another common finding that we come across is low thyroid or adrenal function.  Based on lab results, we’re able to make individualized recommendations that can help support normal thyroid and /or adrenal function, thus helping improve energy levels.

A third common cause of low energy is digestive issues or food sensitivities, which can lead to malabsorption and a multitude of other symptoms.  By recommending the proper diet and supplements, energy can be restored and an array of other health issues can often be cleared up.

So if you’re not feeling great, make sure you get some lab testing to make sure everything is ok. If you would like us to review any testing you’ve had done, or order new testing, just stop by or give us a call.  We’d be happy to help.
